According to Dr. Glasser, our journey to be happy and content is based on the fulfillment of FIVE basic needs. When these needs are being filled appropriately, we are at our best! With all of our needs met, we can reach for the stars and accomplish our wildest dreams!
When we are having difficulties in life, Dr. Glasser proposes it is important to first look at the basic needs and see which ones need some work.
The basic needs are as follows:
Love/Belong
Power/Control
Security/Safety
Fun
Freedom
Now, while everyone has these basic needs in their life, that does not mean that everyone values each need the same. That’s the part that makes us human – we all have a unique variance to how much we each need needs to be met so we will feel satisfied! For some people, life is all about power and control. For others, nothing but fun and freedom is important.
I think the important thing to remember here is the word “moderation.” Anything done without moderation, EVEN moderation, can pose seriously problems.
One of the important aspects of utilizing the basic needs as a framework for better understanding our life is to determine what each need means to YOU on an individual level. To help with this process, I created the chart below which can act as sort of a launching point for forming your own definitions and meanings for each of the basic needs!
